Healing Your Heart; Rewrite Your Story with Awareness and Intention

By Tris Thorp

(Review E.P.I.C. May/June 2019 Issue)

Ready to let go of all that’s holding you back? If you answered with an unbridled, “Yes!” I’ve got the perfect book for you. Healing Your Heart should be required reading for anyone looking to truly shed past hurts, traumas and limiting beliefs and move forward with empowered clarity and confidence. Make no mistake, this work isn’t for the shallow “just get over it and move on” crowd. Tris Thorp’s methods mine the depths of old wounds and fears, and you’ve got to be ready and willing to dive in and do the work. Compassionate evaluation, release and forgiveness of ourselves and others is spiritual gold, and Healing Your Heart contains the tools you’ll need to accomplish it.

Tris counts personal growth legends David Simon and Debbie Ford among her mentors, as well as Deepak Chopra, whom she now shares the stage and teaching. Using the best practices she’s learned from them, including shadow work, meditation, and emotional release techniques, she combines them with other powerful change agents in her wellbeing toolbox, including Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and journaling. As you can see, it’s a multi-faceted system that addresses the practical and spiritual parts of human nature, holistically engaging the mind, body, and spirit.

According to Tris, the most essential healing practice is compassionate self-inquiry. Combining “Maitri” (Buddhist word for compassion) with mindfulness, you’ll learn to be kind, curious and patient no matter the rough patches that inevitably appear on the transformative path. Tris shows us that challenges are opportunities for wisdom—there aren’t right or wrong choices, merely different lessons depending on the option(s) we choose. Commitment to do this work is key: you’ve got to affirm you’re willing to embrace the process, knowing there will be times of discomfort, remembering your best life awaits on the other side. Remaining with an open heart and open mind, a practice Buddhists refer to as “bodhicitta,” as you source the root causes of pain and limiting beliefs is also crucial. By understanding your story—the beliefs and baggage you carry as a result of your core values, experiences, emotions, personas, memories, patterns and themes—you can begin to separate experiences from the negative emotions embedded in them. Tris has developed a series of questions to disentangle memories and associated disturbing emotions and effective techniques to release what no longer serves your highest self. Once you’ve purchased the book, you’ll also have access to an online mini-course to assist you in your journey. I found Thorp’s “Forgiveness Process” particularly invaluable. It’s a reliable system to use again and again as opportunities to forgive yourself and others will undoubtedly arise throughout life.

Revealing her own struggles and how she’s successfully moved through them makes Thorp relatable and personable. You’re going to be doing vulnerable, often painful work that requires you to be courageously honest in your self-inquiry. Because Tris bravely divulges her real-life challenges and how they’ve been resolved, you’ll feel safe and trust her expert guidance as you navigate the minefield of your unique set of disempowering emotions, beliefs, and experiences.

If you’re ready to live an authentically inspired and happy life, Tris Thorp has written the perfect book to lead you to do just that. Heart in hand, pen and journal at the ready; grab a copy of Healing Your Heart, take a deep breath and begin. As challenges and opportunities for evolution inevitably present themselves, doing the deep personal development work in Healing Your Heart will give you comfort and confidence to navigate it all with grace.

BLISS TIPS

#1

BREATHE. Sounds so simple, yet we often hold our breath when we are stressed, fearful, or unhappy.

#2

LAUGH. Laughter releases all those feel-good brain chemicals. Watch a funny movie, silly YouTube videos or read something humorous.

#3

LISTEN. There's some good science out there that suggests listening to music--specifically kirtan & mantra music--elevates your mood.
